Proposal
Well it’s about that time to choose our topic. Last week our group made the decision that we were going to argue against the bill that would allow students on public university campuses in Texas would carry handguns. Students would have to have their Concealed Handgun License and must be 21 years old. I think that this is a scary proposition. I also find this a little daunting because I would not like to be in a class with a student who receives an F on a test and has a Glock 9 mm in his backpack. I have always believed that one of the scariest situations in college would be someone with a gun on campus who is mowing down students in front of the library. Also, carrying a gun in a backpack would not be too different from the Plaxico Burress case when he was in a New York nightclub and he shot himself in the leg with the pistol that was in his pocket. You just never know when a gun may go off. For our visual argument we are planning on doing a series of signs that would be read as students walk. This message would be conveyed in five or six signs placed in a row that could reach a high amount of people because of the amount of activity that occurs on campus. Also, one argument that could really help us convey our message would be a list of student’s names that have been killed on college campuses. This could also be used in a paragraph form and may be more effective.

i really love your topic! i myself am very conservative and fully support the right to bear arms. My mom is actually having my roomate and i take a concealed handgun course this summer before we move into our new house haha, shes a tad orf a worry wort. However, i definitely do not think that they be;png on campus! i also think that yall could make a lot of fun visual arguments with this! goodluck!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great topic. I first saw something about this in the Skiff and thought it was a horrible idea to let students carry guns on campus. Especially after what happened at Virginia Tech. Scary stuff! Anyways, good topic and good luck
ReplyDeletegood topic! we almost did this one also. I definitely agree that guns should not be allowed on campuses, there can be so many accidents where the safety is off and could hit someone nearby. I thought I heard that they are making this because it would prevent school shootings, like the one recently in New York. They think if handguns are allowed on campus then other people with guns could get the sniper or attacker, to me it just seems like if this law passed there would be more accidental shootings. good luck!
ReplyDeleteAs an RA, this bill has a lot of meaning to me. There was actually a gun cabinet in Colby at the beginning of this year and it scared the bajeezus out of all the RA's. So I love the fact that you're taking this one up!
ReplyDeleteGreat topic selection. Personally I completely support this bill so I am very interested as to how y'all are going to oppose it. I think that y'all will not be successful if you try and use the argument that now dangerous people will be carrying guns, because the truth is that there isn't anything stopping a dangerous person from carrying a gun in the first place. In order to make a successful argument y'all need to acknowledge that right off the bat. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a very pertinent and good topic. It is something that a lot of people are passionate about (see all the comments!). I think it will be interesting to see how you decide to create texts. There's a lot of choices here, and I look forward to seeing what you do.
