Unit 2 Proposal...maybe

Ok so here's the thing, I still have no clue what I want to spend six weeks on. I mean, yeah the "Octo-mom" is very VERY interesting and is still going on right now in our society and is veeery controversial. If I do decide to do my unit 2 proposal over the birth of octuplets from a SINGLE woman, I will most likely get my primary resources through the Los Angeles Times, possibly interviews done between the octuplet mother and a newscaster, and any other California newspaper, even though this is an event known around the country I believe that most of the best stories will be found in California.
I chose this topic because the whole idea of artificial insemination and invtiro still boggles my mind and I really believe that I need to focus on one event that has happened under that subject/topic because yes there are MANY cases of multiple births ( twins, triplets, etc. ) but why would a fertility specialist insert 6 embryos? Is there something going on in this practice that we don't know about? By focusing on one event that happened as a result of this practice ( and a very touchy subject as that ) I hope to help others better understand how others feel about all this, how I personally feel about this, and also I just wish to see why some people choose and decided to go down this path in order to become pregnant.

Like I said, i'm not 100% sure if this is what I want to do for my unit 2 proposal, but at least I have a strong idea in what I might want to do.

  1. I think this would be a good topic to do, and it would not be hard to gather primary resources either. As long as your keeping your mind open to other possibilities, it's good you have a solid project already! On the note of the Octo-mom particular subject as well, did you hear that a porn company was offering her a million dollars to do porn? And then a rival company offered her million dollars to not do it? hahaha yeah, this subject has spawned quite an interesing number of things around it. I'm sure you could uncover even more weirdness! haha Best of luck!

  2. This sounds like a good topic. I've heard lots of arguments, mostly against, about the issue of a single woman having so many children. One is the fact that she might have to go on welfare that we the taxpayers are paying. I know there are lots of single mothers out there, but how many of them have eight children...and WANTED to be a SINGLE mother of many children? You could definitely find a lot of arguments around this topic if you pick it. Good luck!

  3. I also thought about doing this topic too, I think it will work really well because you can find strong arguments for both sides and can use a wide variety of sources and take it many different ways. Since it's all over the news and everyone seems to know about it, you can get a lof primary sources from people, doctors or professors you know. Your proposal sounds good, I think you should stick with it. good luck with it!

  4. This topic sure is interesting especially in the present state of controversy surrounding it. Make sure to include as many arguments from both sides as you can because you don't want to be too biased in your paper about it. I know many women use in vitro fertilization because they have fertility problems and usually end up with at absolute most triplets. I'm actually a twin from an in vitro fertilization pregnancy so I know that there are often moral reasons for choosing this form of procedure to get pregnant. What boggles my mind is if she already had so many kids why would she have seven more eggs implanted especially when she can't afford raising them. I look forward to seeing you investigate this more.

  5. I think this will make for an interesting paper since there is a lot of debate about what is healthy for a mother and the well being of the fetuses. I am sure there will be arguments for both sides of the issue and it should make for an interesting paper. Good luck!

  6. Amanda,
It sounds like you've identified a popular topic! I hadn't heard anything about this until I read your blog, but I can imagine that the media is having a field day! You've gotten some great comments from your peers, and I hope you'll take their ideas into consideration. I'm interested to see what you find.
